I'm new to this group . . . new to Yahoo! even. As a matter of fact I joined
Yahoo! solely so I could join this poicephalus group.
I have an adorable female red-bellied parrot named Zyda. She is seventeen months
old as of August and I love her to pieces.
Along with Zyda, I also have three cockatiels, three budgies, two lovebirds, and
a sun conure.
I'd post more, but it's getting late and I should skitter off to bed.
Hi,
I am new to the red bellied Parrot and just brought our baby home
yesterday afternoon. I would like some tips/recommendations as to how
I go about making this little guy/gal hand tame. He/she was hand fed
but he is extremely frightened. Thank goodness my husband had a pair
of thick leather gloves because his hand would be in shreds if he
didn't use them to handle him.
Any helpful hints would be appreciated.
Thanks,
Lori

Hi! Glad to see you found this place! =)
Hey guys :)
My name is Aaralyn and I came here from talkbudgies.com. Thanks to
haley for introducing this site to me :)
I have a baby 7-month old Red Bellied named Peanut :)
Thanks for the welcome. Is your red-belly still young? I am very interested in them. We've talked about possibly, maybe, at some time adding another bird and I would like it to be a Poicephalus of some kind. I've read lots of good things about them all.
The red-belly is high on our list (they resemble a Senegal in different clothing!), but I have heard conflicting stories about them. That they are aggressive when they get older/that they are calm. That they are very shy/that they love to clown around in from of company. A lot of the things I've heard are second-hand, though, so I'd love to hear about first-hand experience with red-bellies, esp. mature ones.
Thanks for the welcome! Cheekie Kon-Tiki is a wonderful name. So cute and original! I have found that Kiwi is a probably the most common name for Senegal parrots. :-( Oh well, it does suit him.
Hey there Stephanie! Thanks for joining the Poi Place! Kiwi sounds
adorable. I also have a Senegal Parrot, his name is Cheekie Kon-Tiki.
Glad to have you and Kiwi here!
Hi, just found out about this group from a posting on thePerch.net and I joined right away! A quick intro - my name is Stephanie, I live in New Jersey with my husband, two cats, and our very beloved, bordering on spoiled Senegal parrot Kiwi. We've had Kiwi for about a year and a half. We got him when he was weaned at about eleven weeks of age. My husband had a budgie when he was a child, but Kiwi is my first bird. I never knew they were so much fun - I would have had one long before!
I am a huge fan of Poicephalus parrots in general and Senegals in particular. I'm not sure I want to stir up the whole pot with another bird - Kiwi is such a joy as things are - but if/when we ever do, it will definitely be with another Poicephalus. I am one of those that believe they are the perfect parrot. I belong to a bird club, and I am sometimes asked, "So, when do you think you're going to get a big bird?" Bah! Who needs a bigger bird when you've got all the intelligence and fun packed into one compact, colorful and lively package?
One more thing before I stop rambling, because I know anyone in a group called ThePoicephalusPlace will understand. Kiwi has his own room and for the longest time we left it undecorated because we couldn't decide what to do. Well, I came to a decision. I bought a Parrots of Africa poster (from http://www.theperchstore.net/) and I'm going to hunt down copies of Audobon prints of the Poicephalus parrots and get them framed - and decorate the whole room around that! I may even toss some faux animal print in (you know, zebra or giraffe) as a tribute to the whole African parrot thing. I think it will be a very fitting room for Kiwi (and for us). I'm very excited about it and when I'm done maybe I'll post some pictures.
Well, enough about me and my obsession (hehehe). I am so glad I found this group and I am looking forward to hearing from everyone!
Regards,
Stephanie

Hi Lisa, thanks for joining us!
I must say that I am not a big fan of pellets, but all birds need them
in their diets. I would reccomend some non-coloured pellets (I use
ZuPreem Natural Diet - Parrots & Conures type) and with a mix of seeds
etc., (I use Hagen Small Parrot Gourmet). And of course fresh foods
(fruits, veggies, grain, etc.) But since Pico is used to what the
breeder feeds, switch over gradually to the new food.
Hope I helped.

Hi, my name is Lisa and I am new here. I have a red-bellied parrot
named PICO. I brought Pico home from the breeder's not too long ago.
He seems happy so far, and of course I adore him! He is so smart and
funny, and of course cute.
I have a couple questions on him, though. What is the best diet? The
breeder had him on pellets, and she said they were best. All her birds
eat them. I was wondering what is the best diet?
Anyway, thank you,
Lisa
How much does your poi weigh? Also, don't forget the species, some are
bigger than others! If you could put the normal weight range for that
species as well, that would help. :)
Mine is a Senegal, he weighs 132 grams last time I checked. He's lean
(for a senegal, they have a rather compact build lol) with no extra
baggage. He may have put on weight since then...I guess I'll have to
check him again...
But yes, that is in the normal weight range for a senegal.
So how much does yours weigh?
